Housing

Housing

Would you prefer to stay on the 27th floor of a skyscraper, or do you need a family house close to the city’s park? Rotterdam has it all on offer. Here we explain some key things you need to know to find a house in Rotterdam.

Population and housing

There are roughly sixteen million people living in the Netherlands. Rotterdam has a population of approx. 600,000 and is increasing steadily, due to its growing popularity and lively cultural scene.

Which district suits you?

When you arrive in the city, we would advise you to deliberately get lost in the different neighbourhoods and go exploring. Rotterdam is a safe city and you can explore it alone. There are many lovely streets and areas away from the tram lines, which are most easily accessed on foot. During your time exploring, make sure you look at how well an area is serviced – by transport, by shops, schools etc. – as well as the types of housing available (tower blocks, rowhouses divided into flats, single-family dwellings, etc.). When you see a road you really like, note it down. A quick search online will then give you the postalcode of the area. This is important when narrowing down your search for a place. Please find here an overview of all neighbourhoods in Rotterdam.

Helpful tips from friends and colleagues

No one likes house hunting, so everyone will be sympathetic to your search. If you are working in an office or have Dutch colleagues or friends, be sure to ask them if they have any suggestions or leads. They will be helpful if they can!
